Abby's (totally awesome) goals for learning Japanese!

Last Update: 03/02/2025

  • Learn how to type in Japanese (and NOT write BY HAND; cauz I won't use it as much!!!)
    • Maybe, like, learn to write SOME characters by hand, but it’s not my main goal!!!
  • Learn to RECOGNIZE characters! Like, know what they mean, tell them apart, and how to pronounce them in context! (≧ω≦)
  • Grammar is super important to type coherent stuff, so I might need to read a bit about it! ( ̄▽ ̄)ノ
  • Be able to read fluently in Japanese (✧ω✧)
    • This totally includes Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji
  • Play and understand Japanese video games! \(≧∇≦)/
    • I could blog about Girls RPG: Cendrillon Life, and be able to play it with no problem! (。•̀ᴗ-)✧
  • Listen and understand Japanese songs! (≧ω≦)
    • Sing Vocaloid Karaoke! (and Yakuza songs too lmao)
  • Be able to speak a bit!(。♥‿♥。)

Let’s do this, fam! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

Progress Calendar:

2025:

24/01:

  • Started learning Japanese

  • Started WaniKani for learning Kanji

  • Started Anki for Hiragana and Katakana (using online WaniKani deck)

WaniKani, a kanji learning application by Tofugu

  • I got Girls RPG: Cendrillon Life. I can’t understand any of it! xO

25/01:

  • Started Duolingo

26/01:

  • Digital notebook creation
  • Added Duolingo’s S1U1-S1U7 (Section1-Unit) to Anki
  • Played Duolingo, realized the bad side of gamification
  • Deleted Duolingo Anki cards (they were really bad xO)
  • Ditched the Duo \(^v^ )/

01/02:

  • Replayed the Duo (a bit)
  • Started using Lingodeer (for three days now)
  • Still using Wanikani
  • Tried bunpro and jpdb
  • Need to check Genki book volume 1 and maybe browse some moar videos

08/03:

  • It's been a while now since I last updated this list (and an even longer time now since I've revised) but I'm now level 4 in Wanikani. Since I can't afford the subscription unfortunately, I may have to rely on Anki.
  • Oh yeah, and I got Genki I book, yippee!!!
  • I tried playing other games in Japanese (like Animal Crossing, Yo-kai Watch...) and... does watching subtitled J-dramas count as learning? :P I guess not!

jpdb.io SRS is good, but better for revision rather than learning

Basically title, I’ll drop it but come back to it to review the Genki 1 vocab (and kanji?)

It would be tho useful to couple it with Duolingo lacking kanji by looking for words 😊 (or not! bye bye green bird!)

Wanikani is beautifully nice for recognition!! It works <3

Duolingo is fun… but

It’s one hell of a drug to “earn” points and NOT learn anything… why repeat the same thing ESPECIALLY when you know you’ve grown familiar with? You feel this urge to grind aimlessly without doing any real retention or learning…! I think it’s then a good time to stop and reward yourself for figuring this out >:O

Anyhoo, Duolingo looks cute as hell and it’s fun to do… regardless! I think it could still be used as a “plus” tool, cauz it’s F-U-N!

So here’s the deal, we could implement Spaced Repetition System (SRS) in Duo… the thing is… I’ve already added various cards on Anki but they still need a proper revision.

We could make a “Unit-Section” SRS based schedule, and “reward” ourselves with points and blink-blinks and cute gifs! (I think we can either program this or check if it exists online already lmao)

Alright… Anki now is a bit “messy” (^_^’ ) I guess I should “get rid” of the cards I made to really “think” through this…!

There is a BIG problem with Duolingo, and that’s regarding KANJI! I wanna learn:

  • How to read kanji appropriately
  • AND learn kanji-based vocab

So, we should do our research every time we come across a word in unit to look it up!

Wait, hold on, we’d need to ditch the duo lmao… x) it’s perhaps fun, but not good at all for learning...! It's addicting but not really educative :(
